Kharismal, also widely known by its chemical name Methyl dihydrojasmonate (along with other trade names such as Hedione, Claigeon, and Cepionate), is one of the most important and revolutionary synthetic fragrance ingredients in the modern perfumery industry. Inspired by the molecular structure of methyl jasmonate found naturally in jasmine, Kharismal delivers a delicate, elegant jasmine scent intertwined with a touch of citrus freshness.
Olfactorily, Kharismal is highly valued for its ability to create radiance, excellent diffusion, and transparency for the overall fragrance. Although it bears the characteristics of white floral notes (such as jasmine, lily of the valley, and magnolia) with a slight accent of red fruits, Kharismal is not harsh or animalic like natural jasmine extract. Acting primarily as a heart note, this ingredient acts as a blender, helping to enhance volume, longevity, and a "bloom" effect for complex perfume formulas, making the scent smoother and more natural.
The special feature of the Methyl dihydrojasmonate molecule lies in its stereochemical structure with cis and trans isomers. While standard versions are usually racemic mixtures with about 90% trans isomers and 10% cis isomers, premium versions (such as Kharismal Super or Hedione HC) are enriched with a high ratio of cis isomers (often from 60-75% or more). The cis isomer has an odor threshold 16 to 20 times lower than the trans isomer, providing explosive diffusive power, radiance, and an outstanding room-filling ability that ordinary versions cannot match.
Thanks to its flexibility and versatility, Kharismal is used incredibly widely. It appears in about 60% of fine fragrances (Eau de Parfum) launched on the global market. Besides fine fragrances, Kharismal is also a core ingredient in cosmetics, personal care products (shower gels, shampoos, lotions), as well as household care products (laundry detergents, fabric softeners, room sprays) thanks to its excellent substantivity on fabrics and its ability to bring a clean, fresh feeling. Perfumers can use this material at a ratio of 1% to over 50% in a formula (an extraordinary usage range for a fragrance material) without breaking the fragrance structure.
Regarding physical properties, Kharismal is an oily liquid, ranging from clear colorless to pale yellow. This is considered a very safe ingredient, unrestricted by IFRA standards (51st Amendment) for most applications and containing no regulated allergens. Furthermore, this material is highly biodegradable in aquatic environments, transforming into inert products (such as water, biomass, and CO2), perfectly aligning with eco-friendly criteria and meeting the growing demand for sustainability.
