Globanone, also known by its chemical name 8-Cyclohexadecen-1-one, is a synthetic macrocyclic musk ingredient researched and developed by Symrise. Existing as a clear liquid at room temperature, the introduction of this molecule in the late 1990s carried major significance for the sustainability trend in the cosmetic and fragrance industry. As older polycyclic musks came under criticism for their bioaccumulation potential and contribution to water pollution, Globanone emerged as an ideal alternative thanks to its ready biodegradability and more environmentally friendly profile. It gave perfumers a highly effective tool for building safe fragrance structures that meet the strictest modern ecological standards.

Description

Globanone belongs to the musk family, offering a very clean, soft scent with a warm skin-like character interwoven with smooth powdery nuances. It is a base note, serving excellently as a fixative, foundation material, and blending agent. In a formula, this ingredient helps increase the overall volume of a composition, linking floral and woody elements together without distorting the original structure. The combination of Globanone with Iso E Super, Hedione, or other musks such as Ambrettolide has become a familiar formula for creating an airy “white musk” effect. Although it is an easy-to-use liquid, it can still be diluted to 10% or 50% in safe solvents such as DPG or IPM to optimize weighing and handling. From a historical documentation standpoint, because Steffen Arctander published his perfume material dictionary in 1969, long before Globanone was invented, this material is entirely absent from his writings.

Applications

The applications of Globanone extend across many fields, from fine fragrance, soap, and candles to body care products. One of its greatest advantages is its strong safety profile: it is not phototoxic and is not among the high-risk allergens that must be declared on product labels. Since it is not subject to strict usage restrictions imposed by IFRA, perfumers can use it quite freely at levels from 1% to 10% or even higher to create a solid base. Today, Globanone plays the role of a strategic secret weapon for Symrise, appearing quietly yet powerfully in countless minimalist, clean, and modern fragrance creations across the global market.
