Applications
8-Cyclohexadecen-1-one (CAS 3100-36-5) is an unsaturated macrocyclic ketone with a soft, clean, long-lasting musky–amber character, used primarily in fragrance applications as a musk base note and fixative in fine perfumery, laundry scents, soaps and detergents, and personal- and home-care products, where it enhances diffusion, boosts substantivity on skin and fabrics, and rounds floral, woody, amber, and fresh accords; owing to a more favorable environmental profile than nitro/polycyclic musks, macrocyclic ketones like this are often preferred in IFRA-compliant formulations; it is also used in olfactory research (structure–odor relationships, GC/MS reference standards), in fragrance delivery development (microencapsulation, solid carriers), and as a reference for macrocycle synthesis studies; technically, it shows good surfactant compatibility and heat/alkali stability in detergent matrices, although the C=C bond can oxidize so antioxidants are commonly co-used; it is not intended for flavor applications.
