Chinese Cedarwood Essential Oil, also known in Vietnam as Ngoc Am, is steam-distilled from the wood of a cedar-like tree native to China. As Cupressus funebris is naturally adapted to the local Chinese climate, the essential oil produced from trees grown there develops richer and more pronounced woody nuances than Ngoc Am cultivated in other countries.

Unlike other cedarwood oils, Chinese Cedarwood has the character of aged wood, blended with the cool, sharp freshness of coniferous trees, followed by mild spicy and smoky undertones. It is considered the smokiest essential oil among the different types of cedarwood.

Blending

Chinese Cedarwood Essential Oil has a dry, warm woody aroma with an aged, slightly dusty character, accompanied by sharp, spicy and distinctly smoky nuances.

Although it is rarely used in fine fragrance, Chinese Cedarwood Essential Oil is more commonly applied in aromatherapy and home diffusion. It creates a classic Asian incense-like effect, adds depth to fragrance accords and improves the longevity of woody notes.

Aromatherapy

With its rich, warm woody aroma and high concentration of compounds with antibacterial activity, Chinese Cedarwood Essential Oil has been reported to help repel insects and control mosquito larvae.

One of its most notable constituents is cedrol, a compound associated with relaxing and calming effects on the nervous system, which may help reduce stress and improve sleep quality. Other compounds, including cis-thujopsene, α-terpineol and α-pinene, also contribute to the oil’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

In aromatherapy, this essential oil is commonly used to promote calmness, emotional stability, concentration and mental balance.
