Amyl Salicylate, also known as Isoamyl Salicylate, is a synthetic material that has played a foundational role in the history of the fragrance industry. Although it occurs in trace amounts in nature, such as in black tea and rum, it is produced commercially mainly through the esterification of salicylic acid with amyl alcohol. The introduction of Amyl Salicylate in the late nineteenth century marked a major turning point, enabling perfumers to shape the classic Fougère family and helping to initiate the rise of Trèfle-style perfumes. In physical form, it is a clear, colorless liquid, characterized by a floral-herbal profile within the green fragrance family.
Description
Its scent unfolds with a sweet impression reminiscent of clover and orchid, interwoven with fresh green herbal nuances and a slight warmth of balsamic resin. Functioning from the heart note to the base note, as well as serving as a fixative, blender, and modifier, this material has moderate odor strength, good diffusion, and a lasting presence of around 48 to 100 hours on a blotter. In fragrance compositions, Amyl Salicylate helps soften harsh notes, link herbal elements together, and create a smooth green base. One of its most iconic uses is in combination with lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin to build the firm structural backbone of the Fougère family. Trèfle and Fougère can be considered close relatives because both rely on the classic framework of lavender, oakmoss, and coumarin. The difference lies in their character: while Fougère tends toward a drier, sharper, and more masculine expression, Trèfle is sweeter, greener, and more floral, largely because of the more pronounced presence of salicylate materials. As an easy-to-handle liquid, it is commonly used either neat or diluted in DPG.
Applications
In terms of applications, this material is widely used in fine fragrance, scented candles, leave-on cosmetics, and rinse-off products. Thanks to its exceptionally high stability, it is consumed in large volumes in the soap and detergent industry. However, Amyl Salicylate is subject to IFRA restrictions on maximum use levels because of its skin sensitization potential, with recommended levels in perfumery typically ranging from 1% to 5%. Users should note that it may cause skin irritation or sensitization at high concentrations and is toxic to aquatic life, though it is not phototoxic. Proper storage requires keeping the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Fougère masterpieces such as Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and the legendary Le Trèfle Incarnat by L.T. Piver both bear the strong imprint of this ingredient. Finally, the value of this material was clearly affirmed in Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, where expert Steffen Arctander described Amyl Salicylate as having a sweet odor with a distinctly fresh green-herbal character. He emphasized its great importance in soap due to its tenacious substantivity, while also recognizing it as a core component in the creation of Trèfle and orchid accords.
