Applications
Verbenol, (S)-cis- (CAS 1845-30-3) is a bicyclic monoterpenoid alcohol with a piney, herbal odor, used broadly as a forest semiochemical: a component of aggregation pheromone blends of several bark beetles (e.g., Ips typographus) for lure formulation, population monitoring, and behavioral manipulation in pest management; in organic synthesis and flavor–fragrance work it serves as a chiral building block en route to verbenone and other terpene derivatives, and as a model substrate for stereoselective oxidation, reduction, and biotransformations; analytically it is employed as a GC/GC–MS reference standard for tree- and insect-emitted volatiles and to evaluate enantiomeric selectivity on chiral stationary phases; additionally, owing to its distinctive odor, the (S)-cis enantiomer is explored as a fragrance modifier imparting green, resinous, licorice nuances and as a probe in olfactory receptor and chemosensory studies.
