Applications
Stearic acid, CAS 57-11-4, is a waxy saturated fatty acid with a remarkably wide range of uses: in cosmetics and personal-care products it functions as a thickener, emulsifier and foam stabilizer for creams, soaps and shaving gels; in pharmaceuticals and foods it serves as an excipient, anti-caking agent and dietary fatty-acid source; in rubber manufacturing it acts as a vulcanization activator, improves filler dispersion and enhances elasticity; in candles, polishes and paints it imparts hardness, opacity and scratch resistance; in metalworking and PVC processing its derived stearates (e.g., zinc, calcium, lead) work as internal lubricants, heat stabilizers and mold-release agents; additionally it is employed in the production of explosives, printing inks, moisture-resistant paper, animal-feed additives, and surface-protection blends that inhibit metal corrosion.
