Applications
L-Menthone (CAS 14073-97-3) is a naturally derived monoterpenoid with a characteristic minty odour, widely exploited across flavour, fragrance, pharmaceutical and personal-care industries: it serves as a key flavouring agent in chewing gum, confectionery, ice cream, oral-care pastes, mouthwashes and beverages owing to its fresh aroma and cooling sensation; in perfumery, soaps, shampoos and deodorants it contributes sparkling green top notes that mask unpleasant base materials, imparting a clean and invigorating profile; over-the-counter medicinal rubs, cough syrups and patches employ L-Menthone both as a flavour modifier and as a mild topical analgesic with counter-irritant action; synthetically, the compound is an important intermediate for producing optically pure L-Menthol and other terpene derivatives, is investigated as a bio-based insect repellent and flavour enhancer, and is even used as a chiral probe in crystallographic and spectroscopic studies.
