Applications
Geranyl isovalerate (CAS 109-20-6) is the ester of geraniol and isovaleric acid, possessing a delicate fruity-rosy scent and high oxidative stability, which makes it valuable to the fragrance, food, cosmetic and agricultural sectors; it is incorporated as a key or supporting note in fine perfumes, air fresheners, scented candles, soaps, detergents and deodorants to deliver tropical fruit, citrus and rose nuances; in the food industry it is FEMA/IFRA approved as a flavouring for confectionery, non-alcoholic drinks, chewing gum, baked goods and fermented dairy products, and also functions as a flavour masker for unpleasant protein, vitamin or herbal notes; in agriculture geranyl isovalerate is blended into lures and traps that attract fruit flies and other pests, supporting bio-based pest management; within the essential-oil domain it serves as an aromatic carrier solvent that stabilises and enhances the diffusion of lavender, ylang-ylang and rose oils; European pharmacopoeia further recognises it as a terpene precursor for antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant derivatives and as an aroma marker for citral-rich oils, enabling a wide range of uses in natural cosmetics, skin-care formulations, massage products and aromatherapy.
