Applications
Eremophilene (CAS 10219-75-7) is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon of the eremophilane skeleton found in some natural essential oils; in research and industry it is used primarily as an analytical reference and spectral standard (GC–MS, GC–FID, NMR) for identification/quantitation of volatile constituents, enabling quality control of essential oils, phytochemical studies and chemotaxonomy; it also serves as a useful substrate for probing sesquiterpene biosynthesis (e.g., enzyme specificity and selectivity of terpene synthases or microbial biotransformations), as a scaffold/starting point for preparing derivatives with odor or biological properties, and as a model compound for developing chromatographic methods and curating spectral libraries; in flavor and fragrance work, eremophilene is assessed as a minor contributor that may impart woody, herbal or earthy nuances in natural matrices and is examined for stability, matrix interactions and sensory impact at trace levels; additionally, as a plant volatile it is studied for ecological roles (chemical signaling, insect attraction/repellence) and is used as a probe in modeling volatile organic compound emissions.
