Applications
(+)-Copaene (CAS 947-59-1), a natural sesquiterpene found in many essential oils, is used primarily in chemical ecology and agriculture as an enantiomer-selective semiochemical that attracts certain tephritid fruit flies (notably males of Ceratitis capitata), enabling lure formulation, trap-based monitoring, and integrated pest management; analytically, it serves as a GC–MS and chiral-GC reference standard for identification, quantitation, retention index calibration, and authenticity/quality profiling of essential oils and aroma matrices across cultivar and geographic variation; in research, it is employed to probe stereochemical effects in olfactory signaling, optimize behavior-modifying blends, study plant–insect interactions, and benchmark controlled-release volatile systems, and it can subtly contribute warm woody tonalities to perfumery via the natural oils that contain it.
