Applications
(−)-Carvyl acetate, CAS 97-42-7, is a mint-citrus scented acetate ester widely employed in the flavour and fragrance industry to impart a fresh, cooling nuance to perfumes, soaps, shampoos, shower gels and other personal-care formulations, while in food and beverage manufacturing it serves as a stable flavouring agent in chewing gum, lozenges, beverages and baked goods and acts as a bitterness-masking note for high-intensity sweeteners; in agrochemistry the molecule is being investigated both as an insect pheromone lure for environmentally friendly trapping systems and as a natural repellent that can lower pesticide usage; synthetically, (−)-Carvyl acetate functions as a convenient chiral building block for the preparation of optically pure pharmaceuticals, and its biobased origin and ready biodegradability also make it attractive as a green solvent or processing aid in sustainable chemical processes.
