Applications
Butyl butyrate (CAS 109-21-7) is a naturally occurring ester with a characteristic pineapple-banana aroma, widely employed as an FCC-grade flavor additive for candies, beverages, dairy desserts and baked goods; in perfumery and personal-care formulations it imparts a light tropical note and serves as a masking agent for undesirable solvent odors; in paints, inks, varnishes and adhesives the colorless liquid functions as a medium-evaporation solvent that enhances flow, leveling and gloss; pharmaceutical and OTC products use it as an excipient for taste-masking and enteric coating dispersion; flavor-fragrance laboratories rely on it as a GC-MS reference compound and as an insect attractant in ecological field studies; furthermore, butyl butyrate is being evaluated as a bio-gasoline blend component thanks to its high energy density, favorable cetane index and sustainable biomass origin, while meeting EU 1334/2008 and IFRA safety guidelines.
