Applications
(6Z)-beta-Farnesene (CAS 28973-97-9) is an unsaturated C15 sesquiterpene available from natural sources and biotechnology, with versatile applications: in flavors and perfumery it imparts green, herbal, light-woody, fresh-fruity top notes that support citrus and hop-like profiles in beverages, teas, and confectionery; in agriculture it is used as a semiochemical component and reference in pest-management research and formulations (paired with or contrasted to E-β-farnesene to modulate aphid alarm responses and enhance attraction of natural enemies); and in chemicals and materials it serves as a renewable building block for higher isoprenoids (e.g., farnesol and nerolidol derivatives), for hydrogenation to farnesane used in biofuels and cosmetic emollient base stocks, and for polymerization or functionalization (hydrogenation, epoxidation) into poly(β-farnesene), plasticizers, tackifiers, elastomers, and barrier coatings; it is also employed as a GC–MS standard and olfactory reference, and should be stored airtight, away from oxygen and light, due to its oxidative tendency and flammability.
