Applications
Alpha-Pinene oxide (CAS 1686-14-2) is a monoterpene epoxide used mainly as a synthetic intermediate: under acid or zeolite catalysis it undergoes the pinene-oxide rearrangement to campholenic aldehyde, a key precursor for pine/camphoraceous fragrance ingredients and other oxygenated monoterpenes; its strained epoxide ring undergoes nucleophilic opening (by alcohols, amines, water) to access chiral diols, aminoalcohols, and building blocks for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals; it serves as a model substrate in catalysis, stereoselective methodology, and biocatalysis (epoxide hydrolases) to obtain enantioenriched diols; it is used as a reference/analytical standard in GC/LC-MS and as a model compound in heterogeneous gas-particle studies of oxidized monoterpene chemistry; it is occasionally explored toward sobrerol/pinanediol and fragrance materials, but is rarely used directly in consumer products due to reactivity and sensitivity.
