Applications
6-Methyl-3,5-heptadien-2-one (CAS 1604-28-0) is a highly reactive conjugated enone used mainly as an intermediate for flavor and fragrance synthesis, as a scent modifier in perfumery compositions, and as a compact C7 building block to extend polyene chains toward terpenoid/carotenoid-type derivatives; in organic chemistry it serves as a model substrate for Michael additions, selective hydrogenation, site-selective epoxidation, aldol/condensation sequences, and nucleophile additions to alpha,beta-unsaturated systems, and it readily forms oxime/hydrazone derivatives for analytical GC/LC derivatization; in materials and polymer R&D its enone moiety can undergo thiol-Michael coupling to install functional groups or tune surface properties, and it is often employed as a reference substrate/benchmark when probing catalyst selectivity, stereocontrol, and stability profiles.
