Applications
3,7,11-Trimethyl-1,3,6,10-dodecatetraene (often referred to as farnesene) is an acyclic, highly unsaturated sesquiterpene used as a flavor and fragrance ingredient to impart green, apple-like, herbal facets and to boost citrus, apple, pear, and floral notes; as a versatile isoprenoid building block for synthesizing farnesol/farnesal and other sesquiterpene derivatives; and as a precursor to terpene resins, tackifiers, bio-based elastomers, and intermediates for surfactants; in research it serves as a reference/volatile probe in chemical ecology (plant–insect interactions), as a model for studying autoxidation and air stability of aromas, and, upon hydrogenation to farnesane, as a platform for renewable fuels, base oils, and other bio-based industrial additives.
