Applications
2,6-Dimethyl-5-heptenal (CAS 106-72-9) is a branched-chain aldehyde with a green, slightly fruity odor that is widely employed as a fragrance component in perfumery, a flavor enhancer in foods and non-alcoholic beverages, and an intermediate for synthesizing ionone derivatives, vitamin A, and carotenoids; in agriculture it serves as a precursor to semiochemical insect-control agents, while in organo- and heterogeneous-catalysis research it functions as a model substrate for studying mechanisms of selective hydrogenation, oxidation, and aldol condensation, and its reactive carbonyl group is exploited in polymer-surface modifications to upgrade adhesion and dyeability.
