Applications
2-Octanol (CAS 123-96-6) is a straight-chain secondary eight-carbon alcohol employed broadly in fragrance and cosmetic industries to impart warm fruity-floral notes, in food and tobacco flavor formulation, as a mid-boiling solvent and intermediate for ester plasticizers, emollients, synthetic lubricant and metal-working fluids, as surfactant and frother in mineral flotation, dispersant for agrochemical emulsions, antifoam additive in paper and paint, drilling-fluid component in oil and gas, rheology modifier in cement, precursor for octylamine, octyl ether and octyl sulfonate used in pharmaceuticals and detergents; thanks to its high boiling point and low toxicity it also serves as aroma carrier, gas-drying agent and versatile building block for vanilla flavors, disinfectants and other specialty organic compounds.
