Applications
2-Dodecen-1-ol (CAS 22104-81-0) is an unsaturated C12 fatty alcohol widely used as an intermediate and surface modifier: it can be ethoxylated or propoxylated to produce nonionic surfactants for detergents, industrial cleaners, oilfield chemicals, and textile and leather processing; it can be sulfated or phosphated to yield anionic surfactants used as wetting, emulsifying, dispersing, and defoaming agents; it can be esterified (to acetates, maleates, acrylates, succinates, etc.) to make plasticizers, lubricant additives, fiber softeners, and additives for metalworking fluids and cutting oils; it can be acrylated to serve as a reactive diluent or comonomer in UV-curable coatings, inks, and adhesives, improving flexibility, water resistance, and adhesion; it is a precursor to amines and quaternary ammonium salts for biocidal and antistatic agents, as well as to demulsifiers and emulsifiers for oil and wastewater treatment; it is used as an agricultural spray adjuvant to enhance wetting and cuticle penetration and as a starting point for semiochemicals such as dodecenyl esters for insect trapping; it also appears in protective coatings and corrosion-inhibitor systems through adsorption on metal surfaces; it is commonly supplied as an E/Z isomer mixture and should be stored with limited oxygen and light to minimize oxidative degradation.
