Applications
1-Decanol (C10H22O, CAS 112-30-1) is a straight-chain fatty alcohol with a mild odor and high boiling point that serves as a medium-polarity solvent for printing inks, high-solids varnishes and coatings; it is a key esterification feedstock for making decyl oleate, decyl cocoate and decyl laurate, which impart slip, emolliency and a silky touch to skin creams, hair-care products and lipsticks; its C10 backbone is also the building block for non-ionic surfactants such as decyl glucoside and decyl polyethers found in mild facial cleansers, bio-detergents and low-foam industrial cleaners; in petroleum and metalworking fluids 1-Decanol functions as a lubricity enhancer, corrosion inhibitor and defoamer due to its balanced hydrophobe–hydrophile profile; additional uses include water-borne paint coalescing agents, phthalate-free PVC plasticizers, biodegradable carriers in agrochemicals, fragrance fixatives in fine perfumery, and reference compounds in physical-chemistry studies of the n-alkanol series.
