Woody Acetate is the common name for the chemical compound 4-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate, with CAS No. 32210-23-4. In the industrial market, this material is widely known by the abbreviation PTBCHA or under the trade name Vertenex, manufactured by IFF. It is a fully synthetic material, developed through advances in organic chemistry in the search for a versatile woody note offering reasonable cost and high stability. In appearance, it is a clear, colorless liquid with a sweet woody odor accompanied by a soft, powdery floral character. Today, this material is one of the fragrance ingredients consumed in very large volumes worldwide, with applications ranging from personal fragrances to cleaning products.

Historically, the compound has been known and widely used by perfumers since the mid-20th century. In the classic reference Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, Volumes 1 and 2, published in 1969, Steffen Arctander cited the material under the name p-tert-Butylcyclohexyl acetate. He described it as having a sweet woody odor with a pronounced powdery orris-root effect and rated it very highly as a versatile fragrance material, particularly for its excellent substantivity and performance in soap products.

Description

Belonging to the woody-floral olfactive family, Vertenex functions primarily as a middle note and an exceptionally versatile fragrance modifier. Its odor is not as dry or austere as natural cedarwood; instead, it combines the warmth of wood with the soft powderiness of orris, together with a subtle sweet nuance reminiscent of fruit.

The material has a moderate odor intensity, smooth diffusion, and good substantivity, remaining detectable on a smelling strip for several days. In formulations, Vertenex serves as an excellent blender, helping bridge sharp woody notes with more delicate floral materials and creating a smoother, more cohesive fragrance structure.

One of its most technically effective combinations is with Alpha Ionone, Beta Ionone, cedarwood materials, and musks, producing a warm, smooth, powdery-woody olfactive space. Because of its pleasant character and relatively non-dominating odor profile, perfumers can use the material directly in its neat form. However, for easier handling and measurement on a small scale, it is also commonly diluted to 50% in suitable solvents such as Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) or Triethyl Citrate (TEC).

Applications

Thanks to its distinct powdery-woody effect and excellent chemical stability, particularly under alkaline conditions, Vertenex has an extremely broad range of applications, including fine fragrance, home fragrance, leave-on cosmetics, rinse-off cosmetics, and especially soap products.

Under standards established by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the material is generally regarded as having a favorable safety profile and is not subject to particularly stringent toxicological use restrictions, with typical usage levels potentially ranging from approximately 1% to 20% or higher, depending on the structure and intended effect of the formulation.

From a safety standpoint, the compound is not phototoxic and is not generally listed among the fragrance allergens that must be individually declared on product labels. Standard handling precautions should nevertheless be followed: the material should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area, and direct contact of the neat material with the eyes should be strictly avoided.

In today’s fragrance industry, Vertenex can be regarded as a true “unsung hero.” It is a key component behind the characteristic powdery-woody profile of numerous internationally recognized commercial bar soaps, while also contributing significantly to the solid structural base of many contemporary floral-woody fragrances.
