Verdox, also widely known by its chemical name ortho-tert-Butylcyclohexyl acetate (OTBCHA), is a synthetic material that plays an essential role in the fragrance industry. Its development is closely linked to the mid-20th-century work of chemists studying alkyl cyclohexyl acetate derivatives in search of stable, cost-effective fruity and woody notes for use in soap and detergent manufacturing. While the para isomer is characterized by a strong patchouli-woody profile, the ortho isomer stands out for its vivid green apple note and was later commercialized by IFF under the name Verdox. In physical form, this material is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic fruity-woody scent profile. The odor of Verdox is described as the fresh, crisp quality of green apple, intertwined with nuances of pinewood and a gentle cool freshness.
Description
Acting as a top-to-middle note, a modifier, and a blender, Verdox has strong odor intensity and very good diffusion, although its tenacity is only moderate, lasting around 24 to 48 hours on a blotter. In fragrance formulas, it is commonly used to recreate apple and pear notes, helping to brighten and energize floral or woody compositions. Perfumers often combine Verdox with Linalool, Hedione, Galaxolide, Iso E Super, and Allyl Amyl Glycolate to create modern fruity-floral or fougère accords. Because it is a volatile liquid and easy to handle, it is typically used either neat or diluted in DPG.
Applications
In terms of applications, Verdox appears in a wide range of products, from perfumes, scented candles, and leave-on cosmetics to rinse-off products such as shampoos, shower gels, soaps, and fabric softeners. This material is considered very safe and is not subject to strict IFRA toxicity restrictions, allowing flexible usage levels from 1% to 10%, and even up to 20% in specialized accords. Users generally do not need to worry about a high risk of sensitization, phototoxicity, or mandatory ingredient labeling requirements in Europe, provided the material is stored in tightly sealed packaging in a cool, dry place away from light.
Many shampoos on the market with a characteristic green apple scent, as well as commercial perfumes in the floral fruity family, have successfully used this material. According to Perfume and Flavor Chemicals by Steffen Arctander, ortho-tert-Butylcyclohexyl acetate is described as having a powerful fruity odor, strongly reminiscent of apple with woody and camphoraceous undertones. Although Arctander noted its tenacity as moderate to weak, he still rated it very highly for soap applications because of its excellent stability and its ability to blend perfectly with ionone notes and woody materials.
