Triplal, also widely known as Ligustral, Vertocitral, or by its chemical name 2,4-Dimethyl-3-cyclohexene-1-carboxaldehyde, is a breakthrough synthetic ingredient in the fragrance industry. Created through chemical synthesis in the second half of the twentieth century, it revolutionized the green note family by allowing perfumers to recreate the fresh sensation of newly cut grass without the high cost or harshness often associated with natural essential oils.
Description
Appearing as a clear to pale yellow liquid, Triplal gives off a very powerful, sharp odor that realistically evokes crushed leaves and green lemon peel. Belonging to the green note category and the green-citrus olfactory family, this material works mainly in the top note. With extremely high diffusive power but relatively short substantivity, lasting only about 1 to 3 hours on a blotter, it serves as an effective booster and modifier. In formulas, Triplal helps lift and brighten green grass accords, citrus compositions, or provides a foundation for spring floral notes such as lily of the valley and lilac. Its most effective pairings are with Galbanum, Hedione, Linalool, and other citrus notes. Because of its very strong and easily overpowering odor, perfumers generally need to dilute Triplal in safe solvents such as DPG or TEC at 1% or 10% to control dosage more precisely.
Applications
In practical use, this ingredient appears in countless products, from fine fragrance and scented candles to skincare cosmetics, soaps, and household detergents, thanks to its excellent ability to mask base odors. According to IFRA safety standards, Triplal is restricted because of its skin sensitization potential, with the maximum permitted level in perfumes typically ranging from 0.1% to 1%. In reality, even a very small amount below 0.5% is often enough to achieve the desired effect. Users should take particular care to store it in airtight packaging, away from light and high temperatures, to prevent oxidation, and should also be cautious when using it in strongly alkaline environments. Thanks to its ability to deliver a sharp, vivid freshness, Triplal has become an important component in many well-known products on the market, notably fragrances such as DKNY Be Delicious with its prominent green apple character, as well as many bright summer perfumes.
