Trimofix (also widely known by commercial names such as Trimofix O, Fixamber, or Amber Decatriene) is an exceptionally important synthetic fragrance molecule in the woody-amber family within modern perfumery. Developed by IFF chemists in the late 1960s through a catalytic isoprene trimerization process, Trimofix is a complex alicyclic ketone mixture (the reaction product of acetic anhydride and 1,5,10-trimethyl-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene). Presenting as a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid, this material offers a sophisticated alternative to natural ambergris and rare wood extracts, serving as the structural "backbone" for many high-end fragrances.
The scent profile of Trimofix is incredibly complex and multi-layered. The opening note delivers a dry woody character with a subtle smoky facet. As it settles, it radiates the warmth of amber and tobacco, combined with the earthy depth of vetiver roots and an enveloping soft musk. This is an extremely powerful and highly diffusive base note with astonishing tenacity, lasting over 250 to 284 hours on a smelling strip. Thanks to this characteristic, Trimofix acts as an outstanding fixative, helping to anchor volatile notes and providing long-lasting radiance and a solid structure to the entire fragrance composition.
In the art of formulation, Trimofix is frequently used to enhance the body and depth of leather, vetiver, and tobacco accords. It blends perfectly and creates resonant synergies with Patchouli, Iso E Super, Cashmeran, Timbersilk, and Cedarwood oil. Additionally, it increases the sweet incense and resinous radiance of notes like labdanum and opoponax. Beyond shining in fine fragrances (such as masculine or oriental woody scents), its high hydrophobicity (Log P value around 5.2 - 5.55) allows Trimofix to adhere exceptionally well to fabric fibers and skin. Therefore, it is an ideal choice as a musk background for personal care products (body creams, deodorants), laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and candles, especially due to its excellent stability in powder detergent environments.
In terms of safety and regulations, because Trimofix can cause skin irritation and allergic skin sensitization upon direct contact, its use must strictly adhere to the limits set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA). For instance, under the IFRA 51st Amendment, the maximum usage level of Trimofix in fine fragrance sprays applied to the skin (Category 4) is restricted to 2.4%. Household products with no skin contact (Category 12, such as candles and air fresheners) have no usage restrictions. Furthermore, Trimofix is classified as very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H410), meaning industrial handling requires appropriate personal protective equipment and proper waste disposal to minimize ecological impact.
