Tonalide (CAS# 1506-02-1), also known as AHTN (Acetyl Hexamethyl Tetraline), is a widely used polycyclic musk in the fragrance industry thanks to its “clean,” soft, smooth, and highly approachable character. Its signature odor is typically described as a light powdery musk that feels warm and slightly sweet, with a fresh “laundry/linen” cleanliness and a creamy, velvety nuance that helps round out and soften a composition.

From a performance standpoint, Tonalide is valued for strong substantivity and excellent “base-building” behavior. It tends to wrap around other notes, reducing harsh edges in the top, smoothing the heart, and clearly extending the drydown. In many formulas, it also functions as a fixative and contributes a distinct “clean-care” impression in the finished product.

Tonalide is usually supplied as an off-white to white crystalline solid. In terms of solubility, it is essentially insoluble in water but dissolves well in many common perfumery solvents and fragrance bases (depending on the solvent system and temperature), which makes it practical for use in fine fragrance, soap, shower products, hair care, laundry and fabric care, candles, and home fragrance applications. It is also appreciated for relatively good odor stability under typical processing and storage conditions, which is especially useful for products that require long-lasting scent.

In real-world applications, Tonalide is often used to create a clean, soft, powdery musk signature in the base, while helping bridge floral/fruit facets with woody/ambery structures for a smoother, deeper transition into the drydown. In personal care and home care, it commonly delivers a “just-showered / freshly laundered” feeling, adding polish and softness to the lasting phase without turning overly sweet or heavy.

For storage, keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and high heat to maintain odor quality. During handling, follow the SDS and standard safety practices for fragrance materials, and observe any applicable regulatory limits for the target market and the finished product category.
