Timbersilk (produced by IFF) and Sylvamber (produced by DRT/Firmenich) are prominent trade names representing enhanced versions of the legendary Iso E Super molecule. They share the primary CAS number 54464-57-2, along with related CAS numbers such as 68155-66-8 and 68155-67-9, which are used commercially to identify mixtures of OTNE isomers. These materials are entirely synthetic.
What distinguishes Timbersilk and Sylvamber from conventional Iso E Super is their more advanced manufacturing technology, which significantly increases the proportion of the gamma isomer and consequently provides greater diffusion and olfactory impact. In appearance, they are clear to pale yellow liquids with a smooth cedarwood aroma intertwined with warm amber nuances.
Historically, the parent OTNE molecule was discovered in 1973, whereas Timbersilk and Sylvamber are technological developments of the 21st century. Because of this timeline, neither material appears in Steffen Arctander’s classic reference Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, Volumes 1 and 2, published in 1969, since they had not yet been developed when the book was released.
Description
Belonging to the woody-ambery olfactory family, Timbersilk and Sylvamber primarily function as base notes. They act as excellent fixatives and fragrance modifiers, imparting a multidimensional spatial effect to a composition.
Their odor evokes the warmth of cedarwood but is brighter, more vibrant, and more ambery than traditional Iso E Super. These materials have a moderate intrinsic odor intensity yet display remarkable diffusion, appearing and disappearing almost mysteriously in the surrounding air while showing exceptional persistence on a fragrance blotter.
In formulations, they are used to construct a strong woody framework that provides a foundation capable of linking components ranging from citrus notes to florals without making the fragrance feel heavy or muddy. One of the most technically effective combinations is to blend them with Ambroxan, Hedione, and polycyclic musks such as Galaxolide, creating a radiant olfactory aura around the wearer.
Because their odor profile is exceptionally smooth and non-overpowering, perfumers may use them directly in their neat form. However, for easier measurement and handling on a small scale, they may also be diluted to 50% in a suitable solvent such as Dipropylene Glycol (DPG).
Applications
Thanks to their excellent spatial diffusion and high chemical stability, Timbersilk and Sylvamber have an extremely broad range of applications, including fine fragrances, home-fragrance products, leave-on cosmetics, rinse-off cosmetics, and soaps.
Under International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards, OTNE materials are subject to concentration restrictions because of their potential for skin sensitization, with reference usage levels commonly controlled at around 20% in the finished fragrance product.
Regarding safety, these compounds are not considered phototoxic. However, under the regulations of many jurisdictions, particularly in Europe, their chemical designation—commonly listed as Tetramethyl Acetyloctahydronaphthalenes—may be required on product labels because of their allergenic or sensitizing properties.
In today’s fragrance market, while Iso E Super made history through Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules, Timbersilk and Sylvamber have become important behind-the-scenes materials in many contemporary niche fragrances. They serve as key drivers of exceptional diffusion, longevity, and the modern woody-amber foundation characteristic of minimalist yet highly compelling fragrance structures.
