Timbersilk is a breakthrough fragrance ingredient developed and manufactured by the renowned International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). Belonging to the woody olfactory family, Timbersilk is widely known as a premium, more powerful, and refined version of the legendary Iso E Super molecule. With its ability to create a radiant aura that lingers close to the skin, Timbersilk offers a mysterious, gently diffusive, yet incredibly tenacious allure, often compared to having pheromone-like qualities that enhance the wearer's natural magnetism.
Olfactorily, Timbersilk delivers a smooth cedarwood experience, combined with the warmth of ambergris and touches of soft musk. Completely distinct from sharp or dry woody notes, Timbersilk possesses a "velvety" texture, providing an exceptionally smooth, bright, and airy sensation. Despite its woody profile, this material retains a striking transparency, never clouding or weighing down the overall fragrance composition.
The true value and superiority of Timbersilk over standard Iso E Super lie in the isomeric balance within its molecular structure. Timbersilk is engineered to contain a higher proportion of the highest-impact isomers: approximately 13.5% Iso Gamma (compared to 11.7% in Iso E Super) and 8.5% Arborone (compared to 4.8% in Iso E Super). Notably, IFF also incorporates a trace amount (0.07%) of the AmberXtreme™ molecule into the blend. This proprietary formula enables Timbersilk to offer stronger diffusion, superior substantivity, and a highly unique "shimmering" effect to the fragrance.
In the art of perfumery, Timbersilk is a highly versatile ingredient that acts as a perfect booster. Not only does it provide a solid foundation, but it also allows other notes to "smell more like themselves," thereby adding structure, volume, and longevity to the entire blend. On a testing blotter, Timbersilk exhibits impressive tenacity, lasting from 48 hours up to over 172 hours. This ingredient pairs exceptionally well with Cashmeran, Applelide, Bergamot essential oil, and oriental, musky, or floral components. It is also frequently utilized as the primary ingredient in "single molecule" fragrances.
Regarding safety and application, Timbersilk complies with IFRA standards (51st Amendment), with a maximum permitted usage level of up to 20% in fine fragrances, although practical usage typically ranges from 2% to 15%. Thanks to its excellent chemical stability, it can be widely applied not only in fine fragrances but also in soaps, deodorants, shampoos, and detergents. Environmentally, Timbersilk is a vegan-suitable product, containing 75% renewable carbon, and is manufactured using an upcycled process from industrial byproducts. However, it should be noted that this product is currently classified as non-biodegradable according to standard environmental testing.
