Suederal LT is a renowned and proprietary fragrance base manufactured by the leading flavor and fragrance company, International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). First discovered in 1938, it represents a landmark development in the history of synthetic leather perfumery, offering a much softer and more refined alternative to traditional, harsh leather compounds like isobutyl quinoline or birch tar. Physically, it is a clear, slightly viscous liquid with a color ranging from pale yellow to dark yellow.
Olfactorily, Suederal LT is highly regarded for its ability to realistically recreate the tactile sensation and scent of velvety, soft suede. Rather than an industrial or rigid saddle leather smell, its aroma is a combination of dry smoky notes, powdery nuances, and sweet tobacco undertones. Notably, it contains warm animalic facets reminiscent of castoreum, creating a sensual and luxurious skin-hugging suede layer.
Suederal LT is a hemisynthetic mixture inspired by nature. Its core structural skeleton consists of Hercolyn D (hydrogenated rosinic and resinic acid methyl esters), which accounts for 70% to 90% of its total weight. The fragrance is smoothed out with additions like methyl abietate and methyl palmitate. This bulky molecular structure gives it an exceptionally low vapor pressure (< 0.01 hPa or < 1 Pa) and impressive tenacity. Functioning as a true heavy base note, its longevity on a smelling strip can easily exceed 168 hours (more than a week). It acts as an excellent fixative to anchor highly volatile floral, distilled wood, and citrus notes.
In modern perfumery, Suederal LT serves as a foundational building block for constructing suede accords and adding depth to smoky and incense blends. Due to its high potency, recommended usage levels typically range from 0.1% to 5% (with a maximum of around 10% for specific formulations). Notably, despite its animalic aroma, Suederal LT contains no animal-derived products and is considered completely vegan. Furthermore, it meets high sustainability standards, featuring 89.6% renewable carbon and 76% upcycled ingredients.
