Sandranol (also known as Sandacanol / Bacdanol), CAS# 28219-61-6, is a high-performance sandalwood-type aroma chemical, widely used as a heart-to-base note in modern perfumery. With excellent stability and very good substantivity, Sandranol builds a smooth, elegant, and long-lasting sandalwood structure, and can partially replace natural sandalwood in many fragrance applications.
Olfactively, Sandranol is a rich sandalwood note: warm, smooth, slightly fatty and creamy, with a soft waxy–milky facet that feels very round and deep. On top of this soft woody body, it shows subtle floral and powdery nuances, along with a gentle, refined sweetness that creates a cocooning, skin-like effect. At low dosages, Sandranol brings smoothness and roundness to the composition; at higher levels, it can act as a main sandalwood pillar for the entire accord.
In formulas, Sandranol is especially appreciated in woody, oriental, amber, musk, fougère, and modern floral compositions that require a soft sandalwood base. It blends well with other woody materials (cedarwood-type, vetiver-type, patchouli-type), with musks and ambers, as well as floral notes (rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang) and gourmand accords (vanilla, tonka, cocoa). Thanks to its dual role in both body and drydown extension, Sandranol increases volume and depth without making the fragrance harsh or heavy.
Sandranol is suitable for fine fragrances (EDP, EDT, body mists, perfume oils) and fragranced personal care products (shower gels, shampoos, lotions, deodorants), as well as home and ambient scents (scented candles, wax melts, reed diffusers, room sprays). Its relatively good heat resistance and high stability make it particularly effective in soaps, detergents, and other challenging bases.
In terms of dosage, Sandranol is a fairly impactful material. It can be used at trace levels to add softness and a light sandalwood aura, or at higher concentrations when a more pronounced sandalwood theme is desired. With thoughtful use, it allows the perfumer to exploit both its diffusion and its deep, long-lasting character, contributing to modern, elegant creations that are stable and production-friendly.
