Rosacetol, commonly known as Rose Acetate or Trichloromethyl phenyl carbinyl acetate, is a synthetic material that played an important role in the history of the functional fragrance industry. Produced through the reaction of chloral and benzene followed by acetylation, this substance exists as white solid crystals at room temperature. The introduction of Rosacetol in the mid-20th century successfully solved the challenge of finding a rose note capable of withstanding the harsh alkaline environment of soap without undergoing chemical degradation.

Description

Belonging to the Floral and Earthy family, this material has a deep, warm rose scent with a slightly powdery character, clearly interwoven with facets of damp earth and a subtle green metallic nuance. Functioning mainly from the heart note to the base note, Rosacetol serves effectively as both a modifier and a fixative, helping more volatile components remain longer on the surface of the product. Steffen Arctander, in Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, noted this characteristic when describing it as having a “rose odor with a mild earthy undertone” and being “very useful in soaps because of its excellent stability and good fixative value.” In compounding practice, it is often paired with Geraniol, Citronellol, Phenylethyl Alcohol, or Patchouli to create rose accords with greater depth. Although its odor intensity is not especially sharp, its solid physical form requires the user to dissolve it in safe solvents such as DPG, IPM, or DEP at a concentration of 10% to 20% for easier handling.

Applications

Today, Rosacetol is widely used in bar soaps, laundry detergents, scented candles, and home fragrance products at recommended levels of 1% to 5%, while it is only rarely found in modern fine fragrance formulas. In terms of safety, this material is generally compliant with IFRA standards, is not known for phototoxicity or severe allergenicity, but should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place to maintain the quality of its crystalline form.
