Pyralone is a unique synthetic aroma chemical belonging to the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group, also widely known by its chemical name 6-sec-butylquinoline or isobutyl quinoline. This pure active ingredient serves as an essential foundation and raw building block in the modern fragrance creation industry. Rich in history, the isobutyl quinoline compound was the core element in legendary fragrance bases such as Mousse de Saxe developed by De Laire in the late 19th century, as well as the classic perfume Nuit de Noël by Caron in 1922.
Regarding its olfactory profile, the product possesses an intense, sharp leather scent blended with green, herbaceous, earthy, and woody nuances. Its characteristic odor profile replicates the textures of raw leather, vetiver roots, and oakmoss, providing a warm, complex depth with animalic facets reminiscent of castoreum. Notably, Givaudan's Pyralone is described as finer, more aromatic, and tobacco-like, with less of a dry, earthy character than Butyl Quinoline Secondary isomers. Due to its exceptionally high odor strength and intensity, it is recommended to evaluate this aromatic ingredient in a 10% solution or less. Even when used in trace amounts up to 2% in a formula, it can create a noticeable diffusive effect and remarkable transformation across the entire fragrance structure.
With an outstanding substantivity lasting 168 hours or more on a smelling strip, Pyralone is an extremely powerful and tenacious fixative. It is an indispensable ingredient for constructing leather and tobacco accords, as well as Chypre, Fougere, and masculine fragrances, where it imparts superb diffusion and fixation. Beyond fine fragrance, this active molecule demonstrates excellent stability in various functional cosmetic bases, including shampoo, soap, deodorants, antiperspirants, and fabric softeners, without decomposing or altering its scent profile.
