Phenyl Hexanol (also widely known by trade names such as Phenoxanol®, Mefrosol, or 3-methyl-5-phenylpentanol) is a premium synthetic fragrance compound. Physically, it is a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid. This compound is very commonly used in the fragrance and cosmetic industries to provide a natural, luxurious rose effect at a highly economical cost compared to using pure rose absolute.
The most outstanding feature of Phenyl Hexanol is its fresh, clean floral scent profile and excellent diffusivity. Its aroma is a delicate blend of rose absolute, muguet (lily of the valley), and geranium, accented with fresh green nuances and the sweetness of honey. As it evaporates, the top note offers a fresh sensation like dewy petals, then gradually transitions to a rich muguet scent, and finally leaves a soft base. It boasts extremely impressive longevity, capable of lingering for over 400 hours on a smelling strip without turning into a harsh or overly sweet scent.
Thanks to its high stability and longevity, Phenyl Hexanol is an extremely versatile ingredient in formulation. In fine fragrances, it acts to enhance projection and longevity, serving as a foundation for white floral or rose notes. Additionally, it is widely used in personal care products (body washes, shampoos, lotions, deodorants) and home care products (laundry detergents, fabric softeners, surface cleaners). Its fragrance can last up to 48 hours on fabric or skin, helping to mask the harsh odors of basic chemicals and providing a fresh, refreshing experience for the user.
Phenyl Hexanol is easily soluble in alcohol and oil bases, and exhibits good compatibility with many other fragrance ingredients. For storage, the product should be kept in tightly closed containers, stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, and away from direct sunlight to limit yellowing over time. Regarding occupational safety, this chemical carries safety warnings including: harmful if swallowed (H302), may cause damage to organs (specifically the liver) through prolonged or repeated exposure (H373), and harmful to aquatic life. Users should wear appropriate protective equipment and avoid discharging it directly into the environment.
