Para-Cresyl Phenyl Acetate, widely known as Narceol, is a synthetic material that marked a turning point in the recreation of complex white floral notes. Although it has a nature-identical origin and can be found in ylang-ylang and jasmine, this substance is primarily manufactured synthetically to solve the challenge of reproducing the heady, animalic character of narcissus and lily without relying on costly natural extracts.

Description

Appearing as white crystals or an opaque solid that melts when warmed, this material gives off an extremely heavy, sweet scent blending honeyed richness with a characteristic animalic undertone. Belonging to the animalic odor group and the floral-animalic fragrance family, it performs with remarkable persistence in the base note, with longevity lasting for weeks on a blotter. In formulations, it serves as an excellent fixative and modifier, adding depth and a realistic carnal effect to hyacinth, ylang-ylang, or jasmine accords. Its most ideal pairing is with Indole, Benzyl Acetate, Cinnamic Alcohol, and Eugenol. Because of its very powerful odor profile, which can easily evoke barnyard associations if overdosed, and because it is initially solid in form, perfumers must first dilute it in safe solvents such as DPG, TEC, or Benzyl Benzoate at 1% or 10% in order to control the dosage more accurately.

Applications

In terms of applications, Para-Cresyl Phenyl Acetate is used in perfumes, scented candles, cosmetics, and especially excels in bar soap thanks to its absolute stability in alkaline environments. According to IFRA safety standards, this material is not under strict restriction, but in practice its use level usually ranges only from 0.01% to 1% of the total fragrance oil. It is not known for phototoxicity and does not require special allergen warnings, though it should be stored in tightly sealed packaging away from high heat and direct light. Thanks to its ability to create distinctive depth, this material has become a defining soul of many classic floral perfumes built around a narcissus theme.
