Musk Ketone (CAS# 81-14-1) is a classic nitro musk with a sweet, dry, powdery musky odour, subtly vanillic and slightly floral. It creates an overall impression of cleanliness, warmth and soft cosmetic powder, rounding off sharp edges in a formula and bringing a smooth, comforting depth to the fragrance.

With excellent substantivity and strong performance on skin, fabric and other surfaces, Musk Ketone acts as a long-lasting musky base and fixative, enhancing longevity and improving diffusion for floral, woody, ambery or gourmand accords. Although it sits in the base, Musk Ketone still leaves a gentle powdery, dry musky “halo” that makes the overall scent feel more refined and polished.

Musk Ketone is especially useful in floral compositions (rose, jasmine, muguet), oriental–ambery structures, woody and chypre themes, as well as gourmand accords with vanilla, cocoa or ripe fruits. In fine fragrance, body mists, soaps, detergents and fabric care products, it contributes to a “clean, soft, freshly-laundered” character even at low dosages in the concentrate.

The material is supplied as white crystals, with low volatility yet very high tenacity, and dissolves well in alcohol and fragrance oils. When using Musk Ketone in perfumery and fragranced consumer products, dosage should be carefully controlled and relevant safety regulations and technical standards for the target market should be consulted, particularly because Musk Ketone belongs to the traditional nitro musk family.

Musk xylene (CAS number 81-15-2), which has been prohibited for use in fragrance compounds for environmental reasons (vPvB), can be present in Musk ketone as an impurity. Musk ketone should only be used if it contains less than 0.1% of Musk xylene.
