Methyl cyclopentadecenone, widely known on the market by trade names such as Muscenone (by Firmenich) or Muscemor (by IFF), is a premium synthetic macrocyclic musk ketone. It is a fundamental building block in modern perfumery, highly valued for its ability to perfectly recreate the warm and animalic characteristics of natural Tonkin deer musk, while also serving as an excellent alternative to restricted nitro musks (such as Musk Ketone).
The product possesses an incredibly complex and elegant scent profile. It evokes the sensation of warm skin, combined with delicate facets of powder, wood, soap, and a touch of metallic sharpness. In blending, Muscenone plays a highly versatile dual role depending on the concentration used. At very low levels (from 0.05% to 0.5%), it acts as a fragrance enhancer (booster), increasing diffusion, adding volume, and smoothing out the harsh edges of a formula. When used at higher concentrations (from 0.5% to 5.0%), it becomes a primary musk base note, functioning as a powerful fixative that helps anchor more volatile notes.
A standout feature of this ingredient is its extraordinary longevity and substantivity. The scent can last for over 336 to 400 hours on a smelling strip and adheres exceptionally well to skin, hair, and fabrics (even after rinsing). Additionally, this macrocyclic musk has a positive impact on human psychology, evoking feelings of safety, relaxation, and comfort. Thanks to its high ambient diffusion and mind-soothing capabilities, it has even been nebulized through the HVAC systems of major casinos to keep clients feeling relaxed and comfortable.
In the context of the fragrance industry shifting towards green materials, Methyl cyclopentadecenone is an environmentally friendly choice. Unlike legacy polycyclic musks that resist natural breakdown, this ingredient is vegan-suitable, readily biodegradable, and does not bioaccumulate in aquatic food chains. The product has an excellent safety profile for mammals (low toxicity), is non-mutagenic and non-phototoxic, and fully complies with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) safety guidelines for applications in fine fragrances, cosmetics, and household care products.
