Methyl Salicylate, widely known as wintergreen oil or oil of wintergreen, is a long-established material with remarkably broad practical applications. First isolated in 1843 by the chemist Auguste André Thomas Cahours, it is a nature-identical substance originally found in wintergreen leaves and the bark of sweet birch. Today, however, it is produced mainly through inexpensive industrial synthesis, which has almost entirely replaced costly natural extraction.

Description

Presenting as a clear to pale yellow liquid, this material gives off a cool, sweet aroma with the unmistakable medicinal character associated with topical pain-relief liniments. Belonging to the medicinal-minty odor family, Methyl Salicylate is extremely powerful in the top note, with very high diffusion, although its substantivity is only short to moderate. In perfumery, it serves as a highly effective modifier. Perfumers typically use only trace amounts to recreate the slightly green, natural-rubbery nuance found in tuberose, ylang-ylang, or acacia, and it pairs especially well with Eugenol or Benzyl Salicylate. Because its odor is so strong and can easily evoke the impression of a dental clinic, it must be diluted in safe solvents such as DPG or TEC at 1% or 0.1% to allow accurate dosage control.

Applications

In terms of applications, Methyl Salicylate is widely used in pharmaceuticals, toothpaste, chewing gum, root beer-style soft drinks, and to a lesser extent in soap and perfume. Under IFRA safety standards, its use is strictly limited because of the risk of skin sensitization and systemic toxicity, with permitted levels in fine fragrance typically being very low. Users should take particular care to store this material safely and out of reach of children, as it is highly toxic if swallowed in significant amounts and may cause a burning sensation on the skin when used neat. Despite these safety concerns, Methyl Salicylate remains a signature component in familiar products such as Salonpas patches and Listerine mouthwash, and it also lends a distinctive accent to the legendary tuberose fragrance Fracas by Robert Piguet.
