Mahagonate (CAS Number: 68966-86-9) is a premium synthetic fragrance compound belonging to the woody olfactory family, manufactured and commercialized by Symrise. Chemically, it is a bicyclic ester that appears as a clear, colorless to pale yellow oily liquid. Mahagonate was developed in the 1980s as a stable and sustainable synthetic alternative to address supply chain risks and ecological issues associated with the overharvesting of expensive natural raw materials like sandalwood and agarwood.

The product stands out with a highly unique tripartite olfactory structure: dry wood, herbs, and mild spicy-mineral facets. The core scent of Mahagonate is reminiscent of aged mahogany, teak, and clean sawdust, subtly combined with the herbal notes of laurel leaf and patchouli. Although it frequently shares the same CAS number with Poivrol, Mahagonate provides a softer, more diffusive background focused on dry wood and leaves, entirely devoid of the sharp, harsh black-pepper note found in Poivrol.

In the art of perfumery, Mahagonate acts as a "lifting agent," creating space, radiance, and airiness, preventing woody-amber or chypre structures from becoming too heavy or congested. It boasts an impressive substantivity of up to 73 hours on a smelling blotter and works as an excellent fixative. Modern "scent stacking" techniques utilize Mahagonate to physically slow down the evaporation of fresh top notes (such as citrus and florals), extending the fragrance's lifespan by up to 40%. The recommended usage level is up to 8% in the fragrance concentrate.

Mahagonate demonstrates excellent stability (good to very good) across a broad pH range from 3.5 to 10.5, making it an ideal choice not only for fine fragrances but also for consumer products like bar soaps, shampoos, shower gels, deodorants, and powder detergents. (However, it is not recommended for use in strongly oxidizing products like bleach or certain body lotions due to the risk of ester hydrolysis). Environmentally, Mahagonate achieves a very high Sustainability Index (9.1/10) compared to natural raw materials. Its modern industrial synthesis employs green chemistry methods, such as supercritical CO2 extraction and enzymatic catalysis, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.
