1-(2,2,6-Trimethylcyclohexyl)hexan-3-ol, widely known in the fragrance industry under famous trade names such as Karmawood™ (produced by IFF), Norlimbanol® (Firmenich), and Timberol® (Symrise), is a highly important synthetic fragrance molecule. Chemically, it is an alicyclic alcohol with the CAS number 70788-30-6 (and 253454-23-8), existing as a colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid. This ingredient is considered one of the fundamental building blocks of modern perfumery, bringing radiance, power, and depth to fragrance formulas.
The most prominent feature of this compound is its extremely powerful and highly diffusive dry woody-amber odor. Its scent provides a sensation of absolute dryness, reminiscent of dry sawdust, driftwood, and cedarwood, combined with the soft notes of sandalwood and warm powdery amber. Depending on the isomer ratio (especially the trans-isomer), this ingredient also exudes facets of patchouli and subtle animalic touches of ambergris. Perfume critic Chandler Burr once compared smelling this fragrance to a "multi-sensory roller coaster" that delivers a feeling of extreme desiccation.
In terms of performance, this compound acts as a perfume enhancer due to its exceptional tenacity (substantivity on a smelling strip can exceed 600 hours), which is attributed to its high molecular weight and very low vapor pressure. This molecule provides excellent "lift," allowing it to easily "cut through" heavy base notes like musk or vanilla to shine. In formulations, it blends perfectly with lavender, citrus notes, and spices, and it creates particularly beautiful modern woody accords when combined with Iso E Super, Ambermax, and Cashmeran.
Thanks to its outstanding stability and versatility, this compound is used in almost all fragranced product categories. In Fine Fragrances, it is a core ingredient for creating minimalist, masculine, and clean woody signatures. In personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, shower gels, and deodorants, its woody note remains distinct and withstands high water temperatures and the impact of surfactants. In home care, it is highly suitable for fabric softeners, acidic cleaners, scented candles, and air fresheners; however, it performs poorly and is prone to degradation in products containing bleach.
Despite its excellent olfactive effects, the use of 1-(2,2,6-Trimethylcyclohexyl)hexan-3-ol requires compliance with strict safety regulations. This chemical is classified as capable of causing an allergic skin reaction (H317) and is very toxic to aquatic life (H410 / H411), so direct contact of the neat material with the skin should be avoided, and it must not be discharged directly into the environment. Most recently, the use of this ingredient has been restricted by the 51st Amendment of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA). The maximum acceptable concentration is regulated based on the product category, for example: a maximum of 1.3% for fine fragrances (Category 4), 0.34% for body lotions (Category 5A), and 0.071% for deodorants (Category 2).
