Isononyl Acetate, commonly known by the chemical name 3,5,5-Trimethylhexyl acetate or by IFF’s trade name Vanoris, is a fully synthetic material and is not found in nature. Its production begins with diisobutene through an oxo process, followed by hydrogenation to the alcohol and finally acetylation. The emergence of Isononyl Acetate in the mid-20th century was driven by the fragrance industry’s urgent need for a fruity-woody note that was highly stable and low in cost, in order to replace natural esters that were easily degraded in the alkaline environment of soap. In physical form, it is a clear, colorless liquid characterized by a fruity profile blended with woody facets.
Description
Its odor evokes the freshness of pear, banana, or apple, interwoven with a soft herbal and woody undertone. Functioning from the top note to the heart note and serving as an effective modifier, Isononyl Acetate has fairly good diffusion and moderate substantivity, lasting from 12 to 24 hours on a blotter. In fragrance compositions, this material helps brighten floral accords, adds a natural nuance to woody notes, and ties components together smoothly. Perfumers often combine it with rose, jasmine, Allyl Amyl Glycolate, Ionones, and Iso E Super. Because it is an easy-to-handle liquid, it is commonly used neat or diluted in DPG.
Applications
In terms of applications, Isononyl Acetate is widely used in fine fragrance, scented candles, leave-on and rinse-off cosmetics. Thanks to its outstanding stability, it has become a familiar ingredient in soaps, detergents, fabric softeners, and household care products. This material is considered very safe and is not subject to strict IFRA toxicity restrictions, allowing flexible use at levels from 1% to 10% or even higher. Users generally do not need to be overly concerned about severe allergy risks, phototoxicity, or mandatory ingredient labeling requirements in Europe, provided the material is stored in tightly sealed packaging in a cool, dry place. Many floral-fruity fabric softeners and bath soaps have successfully made use of this note. Finally, the value of this ingredient was affirmed in Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, where expert Steffen Arctander described 3,5,5-Trimethylhexyl acetate as having a mild fruity-woody odor. He praised its usefulness in household fragrances due to its reasonable cost, good stability, and ability to create a fresh fruity effect without becoming harsh.
