Isojasmone is a premium synthetic jasmine fragrance compound, belonging to the cyclic ketone family, widely used in the flavor and fragrance industry. Commercially, it typically exists as a clear to pale yellow liquid, formulated as a mixture of isomers with high purity (total isomers usually ≥ 90% or 95%). Isojasmone stands out for its natural jasmine aroma, characterized by a sweet, floral, herbal, and woody profile, uniquely combined with fresh celery and waxy nuances. This complex blend prevents the scent from being overly sweet or "chemical", adding authenticity and depth to floral heart notes.
A major strength of Isojasmone is its impressive fragrance tenacity and substantivity. It can last up to 3 days (72 hours) on a smelling blotter and 32 hours on the skin, significantly outperforming the quick evaporation of cis-jasmone. With a very low vapor pressure (0.006 Pa at 20°C), Isojasmone exhibits low volatility, which helps sustain a steady odor intensity, making it ideal as a heart note in fine fragrances like eau de parfum and eau de toilette. In food flavorings, it is used at concentrations of 1-10 ppm to provide lactonic, fruity, and celery notes, serving as an excellent modifier to enhance coconut, peach, apricot, mango, and watermelon flavors.
Isojasmone is highly versatile across various industrial applications. In cosmetics and personal care, it is used in shampoos, body lotions, deodorants, and soaps due to its excellent stability in neutral to slightly alkaline pH environments. For home care products, it performs exceptionally well in all-purpose cleaners, fabric conditioners, and candles. Notably, its cyclic ketone structure makes it resistant to lipase enzyme hydrolysis, ensuring the fragrance does not degrade or produce malodors when used in high-efficiency biological laundry detergents. Furthermore, advanced technologies allow Isojasmone to be encapsulated into "pro-fragrance" complexes (such as cucurbiturils) that slowly release the scent upon exposure to moisture while simultaneously absorbing and neutralizing unpleasant malodors.
Regarding safety and regulations, Isojasmone meets stringent industry standards. It is certified for food safety under FEMA GRAS (number 3552) and JECFA 1115. In the cosmetics and fragrance sectors, it fully complies with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) guidelines, allowing for safe use within specific concentration limits (e.g., up to 25% in fine fragrances applied to unshaved skin, 10% in body creams, and 2.5% in wash-off cleaning products). Additionally, the product is typically stabilized with synthetic α-tocopherol (Vitamin E) to prevent oxidation and ensure consistent quality during storage.
