Iso Muscone (also known commercially as Isomuscone) is a macrocyclic musk ketone, chemically identified as cyclohexadecanone (CAS 2550-52-9; molecular formula C16H30O). At room temperature it is typically a white crystalline solid and is valued as a base-note material that adds smoothness, depth, and a natural “skin-like” finish to a fragrance.

Olfactively, Iso Muscone delivers a pronounced musky character in the classic Tonkin-musk direction, with a soft powdery nuance and a subtly animalic facet that can still read clean and refined at appropriate dosage. It is often effective at low levels and can create strong synergy when combined with other macrocyclic musks, helping to round off the base and extend the overall drydown.

In application, Iso Muscone is broadly useful across many fragrance styles (chypre, fougère, oriental, leather, tobacco, gourmand), particularly when the goal is to increase substantivity and add a gentle musky aura behind the top and heart. Performance will depend on the finished product matrix, but it is commonly used in a wide range of personal-care formats; very strong oxidizing systems may reduce its performance.

Typical use levels vary widely by concept and product type, and can range from trace amounts up to several percent in the fragrance concentrate. As with any musk ingredient, ensure compliance by checking the current IFRA guidance and any applicable regulatory requirements for your specific product category before finalizing the formula.
