Helvetolide® (also known as Himalide® or musk propanoate) is a premium synthetic fragrance ingredient belonging to the alicyclic musk family (the fourth generation of musks) supplied by leading manufacturers such as Firmenich (now DSM-Firmenich) and Symrise. With the chemical formula C17H32O3 and CAS number 141773-73-1, this molecule marks a significant advancement in modern fragrance chemistry. Its unique molecular structure brings richness, warmth, and an elegant, sophisticated signature to perfume formulas.
The most outstanding feature of this ingredient is its multi-layered scent profile and excellent tenacity. Unlike traditional musks that typically only radiate in the base notes, Helvetolide is one of the few "top note musks" due to its strong diffusion and radiance from the very first moments. The scent of this molecule is a smooth blend of the cleanliness of white musk, the fresh fruity nuance of pear, and the warmth of ambrette seeds. In addition, it carries nuances of cedarwood, a dry, powdery texture, and a hint of white florals. This compound has an incredibly long-lasting staying power, capable of lasting over 400 hours (about 2 weeks) on a smelling strip.
In fragrance formulation, Helvetolide acts as a top-to-base modifier and fixative without suppressing or overwhelming other floral or fruity notes in the composition. This molecule performs particularly well and maintains high stability in liquid applications such as fine fragrances, alcohol solutions, shampoos, and body washes, as well as in emulsions, detergents, and fabric softeners. It helps create a clean "second skin" effect, bringing a sense of luxury, and is highly suitable for modern-leaning fragrance structures.
Outstanding not only in its olfactory aspects, this ingredient is also highly regarded for its sustainability and safety. Helvetolide is produced following green chemistry principles, utilizing upcycled turpentine from the paper industry to extract alpha and beta pinene as the starting raw materials. The product is partially biodegradable, contributing to minimizing negative environmental impacts compared to older generations of musks. In terms of safety, this compound fully complies with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards in its 51st amendment, contains no allergens, and is safe for use in cosmetics at permitted concentration levels; however, in its pure form, it is classified as toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
