Dihydro Beta Ionone (CAS# 17283-81-7) is a synthetic fragrance ingredient from the ionone family, with a refined floral–woody character widely used in modern perfumery. It gives a soft, rounded, gentle impression without harshness, reminiscent of violet and orris on a smooth, dry woody base with a light powdery touch. Around this core sits a warm fruity nuance, like apricot and ripe plum, with hints of tea and dry tobacco, adding an elegant depth to many different fragrance structures.
As a heart-to-base note, Dihydro Beta Ionone helps “flesh out” and smooth the entire formula, creating a natural bridge between floral, woody, and fruity notes. It is especially useful in violet, orris, tea, tobacco, dry woods, chypre, fougère, and floral woody musk themes, where it adds a subtle purple-floral, slightly powdery facet together with warm woody depth, making the fragrance feel more sophisticated and long-lasting on skin. In floral compositions (rose, jasmine, muguet, mimosa, etc.), even a small amount is enough to give a soft-focus effect, smoothing transitions between notes and toning down the sharp edges of more powerful materials.
Technically, Dihydro Beta Ionone is a clear to pale yellow liquid with very good stability and substantivity. It is relatively low in volatility and shows high compatibility with most solvents and perfume oils used in fine fragrances, body mists, cosmetics, soaps, candles, and home care products. It dissolves well in ethanol and typical perfume solvent systems and can be used from trace levels up to several percent in the concentrate, depending on the olfactive theme and the role it is expected to play in the formula.
In practical formulation, Dihydro Beta Ionone blends harmoniously with ionones, methyl ionones, damascones, musks, woody notes (cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver), as well as rose, violet, iris, mimosa, tea, and certain fruity accords. Thanks to its ability to round off the composition, mask rough edges, and build depth, it is a versatile backbone ingredient suitable for both niche and mainstream products: from perfumes, body mists, solid perfumes, and balms to scented candles, soaps, shampoos, and fabric care, wherever a long-lasting, elegant floral–woody undertone is desired.
