Citronellyl Acetate is a nature-identical and synthetic ingredient that plays an essential role in the fragrance industry. Although it occurs naturally in lemongrass, geranium, and rose essential oils, it is produced commercially mainly through the acetylation of citronellol. The successful synthesis of this material in the late 19th to early 20th century provided a far more stable and cost-effective alternative to expensive natural rose extracts. In physical form, it is a clear, colorless liquid belonging to the floral family, with a rosy-fruity character.
Description
The scent of Citronellyl Acetate radiates the freshness of rose, intertwined with a sweet fruity nuance reminiscent of pear, apple, and a light citrus brightness. Functioning as a top-to-middle note and an effective modifier, this material has moderate odor strength, good diffusion, and a lasting power of around 12 to 24 hours on a blotter. In fragrance compositions, it helps build rose, geranium, and lily-of-the-valley notes, while also supporting the overall accord with a juicy, rounded effect. Perfumers often combine it with Citronellol, Geraniol, Phenethyl Alcohol, Linalool, Ionones, and citrus notes. As an easy-to-handle liquid, it is commonly used neat or diluted in DPG.
Applications
In terms of applications, this material is widely used in perfumes, scented candles, leave-on cosmetics, rinse-off products, and soaps. Thanks to its good stability, it is heavily used in personal care products and laundry detergents. Citronellyl Acetate is considered very safe and is not subject to strict IFRA restrictions for toxicity, allowing flexible use typically at levels ranging from 1% to 10%. Users do not need to worry about phototoxicity, but should pay attention to residual citronellol content in order to comply with European allergen labeling requirements. Proper storage requires keeping the container tightly closed, in a cool, dry place, away from direct light to prevent hydrolysis. Many bath soaps, shampoos, and bright rose-themed perfumes make use of this ingredient. Finally, the value of this material was recognized in Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, where Steffen Arctander described Citronellyl Acetate as having a fresh rosy odor with fruity undertones reminiscent of geranium and apple. He appreciated its ability to brighten floral accords and also emphasized its excellent usefulness in soap applications due to its high stability and reasonable cost.
