Camphor (chemical formula C10H16O) is a solid organic compound that forms white or colorless pyramidal crystals, distinguished by its characteristic, strong, and penetrating herbaceous odor. On the market, the product is supplied in two main forms to meet various demands: Natural camphor is extracted from the wood, bark, and branches of the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora), usually appearing as white waxy granules and possessing the ability to rotate polarized light (optical activity). Meanwhile, synthetic camphor is typically produced on an industrial scale from turpentine (via alpha-pinene), exists as a white crystalline powder, and is optically inactive. Both forms share the unique property of being able to sublime (transition directly from a solid to a vapor) at room temperature.
In the medical field, camphor is an important therapeutic ingredient due to its anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, and analgesic properties. When applied topically, it is easily absorbed, creates a cooling sensation similar to menthol, and acts as a mild local anesthetic. It is a core ingredient in many balms (such as Vicks VapoRub) and topical ointments that help relieve coughs, nasal congestion, muscle and joint pain, aches, and soothe itching caused by insect bites. Notably, studies have also shown that camphor has excellent anti-aging capabilities by promoting the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts, which helps regenerate the skin, stimulate collagen production, improve elasticity, and effectively reduce wrinkles.
In the cosmetics industry, camphor has a rich history, having been a popular perfume ingredient in the ancient Arab world thanks to its unique scent. Today, camphor extract or camphor-containing hydrosols are flexibly applied in countless beauty care products such as lotions, anti-wrinkle creams, toners, massage creams, facial cleansers, essences, and medicated lip balms. In addition, this compound serves as a fragrance agent and a cooling agent in various other cosmetic formulations.
Beyond health and beauty, camphor is most widely known in households as a highly effective moth and insect repellent to protect clothing. On an industrial scale, camphor is used as a crucial plasticizer to increase the elasticity of celluloid plastics and polyvinyl chloride. It is also involved in the manufacturing process of explosives (as a stabilizer for smokeless powder), lacquers, and varnishes, and is an ingredient in deodorants and air purifiers for living spaces.
Despite being a versatile substance, pure camphor must be handled and stored with care. It is a highly flammable solid that generates flammable vapors at elevated temperatures. Direct exposure to camphor at high concentrations can cause skin irritation, serious eye damage, and harm to health or the central nervous system if swallowed or inhaled in large quantities. Therefore, the product should be stored in tightly closed containers, placed in a well-ventilated area, and kept strictly away from heat sources, sparks, or open flames.
