Amber Xtreme™ (CAS number 476332-65-7) is a premium synthetic fragrance ingredient developed by International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). Chemically, it is a polycyclic ether with the molecular formula C18H32O, belonging to the woody, amber, and musky olfactory family. It is renowned in the perfume industry as an extremely powerful volume booster and fixative, bringing remarkable depth and extending the longevity of modern fragrance formulations.

The scent profile of Amber Xtreme is exceptionally dry, combining dense woody notes and amber with musky and animalic facets. Its diffusive power is phenomenal; the aroma of Amber Xtreme is incredibly radiant and can be clearly perceived even when used at trace levels in a formula.

The longevity of Amber Xtreme is outstanding, with the ability to last for over 168 hours on a smelling strip (blotter) while also demonstrating excellent substantivity on both dry and wet fabrics. Thanks to its good stability, this ingredient is widely used not only in fine fragrances but is also an ideal choice for functional products such as household cleaners, cosmetics, detergents, fabric softeners, and scented candles.

When compared to other "super-ambers," Amber Xtreme offers a unique balance: it is warmer, heavier, and more full-bodied than Ambrocenide, which tends to be sharper, more piercing, and mineralic. In perfumery, it blends seamlessly with ingredients like Cashmeran and Ambroxan to create a smooth, velvety effect. However, perfumers consistently recommend using this material only in trace amounts to prevent it from feeling harsh, masking lighter notes, or causing olfactory fatigue.

Due to its extreme potency, Amber Xtreme is often pre-diluted (for example, to 10% in DPG or other solvents) before use for easier control. Regarding safety and regulations, it has no restrictions under IFRA Standard 51 for many product categories. However, it is classified under GHS as a skin irritant that may cause an allergic skin reaction (H317) and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H410). It should be stored in tightly sealed containers, protected from heat and direct sunlight, ensuring a shelf life of up to 24 months or more.
