Allyl Cyclohexyl Propionate, also known as Allyl 3-cyclohexylpropionate, is a fully synthetic fragrance ingredient that does not occur in nature. It was introduced in the mid-20th century as part of the search for ester materials with a tropical fruity profile, strong diffusion, and high stability under harsh chemical conditions. Physically, it is a clear, colorless liquid belonging to the fruity family, especially the tropical pineapple facet.
Description
The scent of Allyl Cyclohexyl Propionate radiates the rich, juicy sweetness of ripe pineapple, accented by a slight green nuance of fruit peel and a soft floral undertone. Functioning from the top note into the heart note, and serving as an effective modifier, this material has strong odor impact, very good diffusion, and impressive tenacity ranging from 48 to over 100 hours on a blotter. In fragrance compositions, it helps build pineapple, apple, or strawberry notes, while adding brightness and juiciness to the overall accord. Perfumers often combine it with Allyl Amyl Glycolate, Allyl Caproate, Galaxolide, citrus notes, and white florals to create modern fruity accords. Because of its high odor strength, it is often diluted in DPG for easier dosage control.
Applications
In terms of applications, this material is widely used in perfumes, scented candles, leave-on cosmetics, rinse-off products, and soaps. Thanks to its excellent stability, it is heavily used in hair care products, shower gels, and fabric softeners. However, Allyl Cyclohexyl Propionate is subject to IFRA restrictions on maximum use levels due to its skin sensitization potential, with recommended usage typically ranging from 0.1% to 2% depending on the product category. Users should note that it may cause skin allergy, is toxic to aquatic life, but is not phototoxic. Proper storage requires keeping the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Many fruity floral perfumes and tropical bath and body products use this ingredient. Its value was also recognized in Perfume and Flavor Chemicals, where Steffen Arctander described Allyl cyclohexylpropionate as having a strong, sweet fruity odor dominated by pineapple and marked by remarkable persistence. He also noted its broad usefulness in fruity accords, lipsticks, and especially its ability to mask harsh chemical base odors thanks to its excellent diffusion.

Specification
According to the IFRA Specification Standard of Allyl esters, Allyl esters should only be used when the level of free Allylalcohol in the ester is less than 0.1%. This recommendation is based on the delayed irritant potential of Allylalcohol.
Please also refer to the IFRA Specification
Standard Allyl esters.
