Applications
Tetradecanal (myristaldehyde, CAS 124-25-4) is a C14 straight-chain aldehyde with a fatty–waxy, slightly citrus-green odor, used primarily as a fragrance ingredient in fine fragrances, soaps, detergents and home-care products to add aldehydic freshness, diffusion and substantivity; at trace levels it may also be employed in flavor formulations in some jurisdictions to impart creamy, fatty and citrus-peel nuances, and it serves as a valuable intermediate in organic synthesis to access the corresponding C14 alcohol (myristyl alcohol), acid (myristic acid), oximes/imines and acetals for making surfactants, emulsifiers, fabric-softener actives and other functional materials; it is a convenient starting point for building unsaturated C14 aldehydes used as insect pheromones for crop protection; it is also used as a reference/internal standard in GC/GC–MS methods for long-chain aldehydes in oils and biological samples, and as a model substrate for redox enzyme (ALDH/ADH) studies in the lab.
