Applications
Santene (CAS 529-16-8) is a volatile bicyclic monoterpene with a pine–camphor odor used mainly in fragrance applications and as a synthetic intermediate. In perfumery it lifts fresh, balsamic, herbal, woody facets in fine fragrance, deodorants, personal care, and household care; in flavor work, where permitted by regulation, it can be dosed at very low levels to add a piney accent to citrus, mint, or herbal profiles. Chemically, santene serves as a feedstock for selective transformations (oxidation, halogenation, rearrangement) to obtain terpene alcohols, ketones, and esters—such as borneol or isobornyl esters—used in resins and fragrance ingredients. In R&D it is employed as a reference/marker in essential-oil GC/MS profiling, as a model substrate to probe terpene carbocation rearrangements, and as a renewable hydrocarbon platform for developing additives, bio-based solvents, and new functional materials.
