  • Applications

(S)-gamma-Calacorene (CAS 38599-17-6) is a chiral aromatic sesquiterpene used primarily as an enantiopure reference standard for chiral GC/GC–MS/HPLC, optical-rotation calibration and chiroptical methods (ECD, VCD) to identify and quantify calacorene traces in essential oils and fragrance mixtures; in asymmetric synthesis and catalysis research to benchmark enantioselectivity and probe terpene cyclization mechanisms; as a probe in studies of plant/microbial sesquiterpene biosynthesis and in chemotaxonomy, origin-tracing and authenticity testing of essential oils (e.g., cedarwood, juniper, patchouli) via GC fingerprinting; in fragrance technology the (S) enantiomer is evaluated as a woody–resinous note to build woody/amber backgrounds and fine-tune nuances in fine fragrance, personal care and home-care, and in research on microencapsulation/controlled-release of odorants; it is also used as a hydrophobic model compound to assess matrix–odorant interactions, oxidative stability and volatility, and as a target in exploratory bioactivity screening during early lead finding.
